The 54th edition of the San Sebastián Street Festival will be titled “To the Rhythm of the Bomba!” and will take place from Jan. 18 to Jan. 21, 2024 in Old San Juan, Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced Wednesday.
“The San Sebastián Street Festival of 2024 will be dedicated to three outstanding figures in music, community service, civics, art, entertainment and sports,” the mayor said. “In the sports field, the career of the basketball player José Rafael Ortiz Rijos, better known as ‘Piculín Ortiz,’ will be highlighted. In civics and community service, the work of Chef Iván Clemente will be recognized for his great achievement through the Comedor de la Kennedy project. While in music, entertainment, acting and dancing, tribute will be paid to the career of a woman from San Juan, la Bomba Puertorriqueña, la Vedette de América: Iris Chacón.”
Along with the dedications, the San Juan municipal administration will present the Rafaela Balladares Culture Awards for the second consecutive year. Those honored are: Fundación César Concepción, Fundación Felisa Rincón de Gautier, and in posthumous tribute to the memory of Gary Núñez, director and founder of the group Plena Libre.
“On this occasion and for the first time in the history of the San Sebastián Street Festivals, the first troubadour competition will be held where the San Sebastián Cup 2024 will be competed for,” Romero Lugo said. “The competition will take place in Plaza de Armas, on Sunday, January 21, starting at 11 in the morning. On the same day, at 4 in the afternoon, the first Bomba dance meeting will be held in Plaza Colón.”
As part of the shows, Plena Libre will perform in La Plaza Del Quinto Centenario, paying tribute to Gary Núñez, and the lineup continues with Junte Loiceño, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Hermanos Cepeda, Iris Chacón, Ednita Nazario, Victoria Sanabria, Sonora Ponceña, Yolandita Monge, Giselle , Víctor Manuelle, Moncho Rivera, Andy Montañez, Plenealo, LimiT 21, and Wisin as the closing act.
In Plaza De Armas there will be Barreto and his Plena, Joseph Fonseca, the Pleneros de la Cresta, Luis González and his Orchestra, Grupo Manía, the Baile de Época, A Son de Guerra, Pleneros de Severo, Galdy Santiago & Fabian Torres and their orchestra, Oscarito, the 1st San Sebastián Street Festival Troubadours Competition, Llorens Torres Senior Adult Orchestra, Makein Group, Hermes Croatto, La Tribu de Abrante, and Andrés Waldemar will close the show.
In Plaza de la Barandilla, meanwhile, the focus will be more family-oriented since during the day there will be a calendar of activities for children that includes shows such as: Workshops and games for children by Pompearte, Jubilin the Magician and Bombo the Clown show, Lucita and her friends (character puppets, animated and original songs), Bomba con Trovadores de Yauco, Bomba Semilla Infantil workshop, Dinosaur and Baby Dinosaur show, Saritas and her friends (puppets), Atención Atención, Transformers characters, Tamboricua, Dance Group Capital Kids, Grupo Imbuye from Loíza, and Gibaro from Puerto Rico.
At night in the same venue, the public will enjoy the rhythm of Atabal, Tuna de Cayey, San Juan Havana, Junte de los Hermanos Sanabria, La Primerísima Orquesta de Tommy Olivencia, Glenn Monroig, Aidita Encarnación, Choco Orta, Lourdes Robles, Son Divas, From Plena to Plena, Decimania, Tuna de Segreles, and Puerto Rican Power closing.
In Plaza Colón, Siete, Algarete, Millo Torres, La Secta, Laberinto de Coco, Viva Nativa, Los Rivera Destino, the first Drum Meeting of the San Sebastián Street Festivals, Alberto Style and Dj Nelson will perform, and Rai Nao will close.
