Over $8.7 million in funds for Puerto Rico assigned from various federal agencies will go toward supporting the reconstruction of infrastructure, promoting scientific innovation and strengthening higher education on the island, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced Wedneday.

An important percentage of the $8,738,425.57 comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under sections 406 and 407 of the Stafford Act.

Those resources are for the repair of critical infrastructure and the removal of debris in municipalities impacted by hurricanes Maria and Fiona in 2017.

The municipality of Ciales will receive over $1.7 million for permanent work on highways and bridges damaged by Hurricane Maria, while Naranjito will receive over $2.8 million for rural roads damaged by Hurricane Fiona.

The Puerto Rico Science, and Research Trust, meanwhile, will receive $100,000 for the “Puerto Rican Higher Education Assembly of Researchers, Thriving Not Just Surviving” project, a conference whose aim is to promote student success in higher education.
