Caguas beats the Giants in Carolina, leads series 2-1

The Caguas Criollos got a win on the road Sunday to take a 2-1 series lead in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League finals. Game 4 is at 7:15 p.m. today at Yldefonso Solá Morales Stadium in Caguas.

The Caguas Criollos defeated the Carolina Giants 4-2 on Sunday at the Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium in Carolina to take a 2-games-to-1 lead in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League finals.

It was the second-straight victory for the Criollos, who broke the Giants’ home field advantage in the series.

Caguas took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Nelson Velázquez and a two-run single by Juan Centeno.

The Giants scored twice in the seventh inning to pull within a run. Bryan Torres was caught off base at first and Erick Félix took the opportunity to score from third to make it 3-1. Then JC Escarra drove in the second run with a double.

In the ninth inning, a single by Jancarlos Cintrón drove in Ismael Salgado for Caguas’ fourth run and the winning margin as Carolina failed to score in the bottom of the ninth.

Right-hander Ricardo Vélez pitched 1.1 innings in relief with no hits and four strikeouts to notch the win. He replaced Braden Webb, who in 4.2 innings struck out eight with just one hit allowed. Veteran Ricardo Gómez covered the ninth inning and achieved the save with two strikeouts.

Eduardo Rivera took the loss for the Giants with 2.2 innings pitched and three runs allowed.

The series continues today with Game 4 at Yldefonso Solá Morales Stadium in Caguas at 7:15 p.m.
