Defending champion Florida ousted in Double A playoffs

The Hatillo Tigers defeated the 2024 champion Florida Titans on Sunday in the North Section A semifinal series of the Double A Superior Baseball League.


Hatillo was one of two teams that secured their spot in the section finals on Sunday.


The Tigers eliminated the Titans in a decisive fifth game, 14-11, behind a strong performance by Jay Feliciano, who drove in four runs, homered and scored twice. Additionally, leadoff man Alexis Pantoja scored three runs.


Erick Sepúlveda earned the win in relief, and Sebastián Cruzado earned the save after striking out Ian Laureano with the bases loaded to end the game.


For Florida, Gaby Ayala drove in eight of his team’s 11 runs with two home runs, a double and a single.


Hatillo will now face the Camuy Arenosos in the North Section final.


In the Northwest Section, the Aguadilla Sharks (Tiburones) secured their spot in the final by eliminating the Añasco Founders (Fundadores), 6-3. Jaime Acevedo pitched 1.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. Aguadilla used a total of six pitchers to achieve the victory.


Rafael Díaz drove in three runs, Héctor Mercado knocked in two more, and Abimael López scored three times for the Sharks, who won their second-straight game after being on the brink of elimination.


Aguadilla will face the San Sebastián Patrolmen (Patrullos) in the section final.


The managers of the 16 sectional finalists were summoned to a meeting today at 5 p.m. at the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation offices in Hato Rey to discuss the details of the sectional final series, which will follow a best-of-seven format.
