Gov. Jenniffer González Colón says that to deal with the situation of gender violence requires much more than signing an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Puerto Rico.
“For violence there is no piece of paper that you can have that says, ‘Tomorrow there is not going to be a murder.’ If it were like that I would do it right now,” the governor said late last week. “For me the important thing in this moment is going to be the appointment of the women’s advocate, that should be a person who leads with strength. I will name Justice Secretary Janet Parra working with victims and carrying out [policies], where she was in charge of this division of the Department of Justice, that are key and indispensable elements to work with the matter of gender violence.”
“If we declare or not an executive order about that, I am going to evaluate,” González Colón added. “I don’t discard it, but I need to see at this moment that it’s necessary.”
