Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD by its Spanish acronym) Commissioner Nino Correa Filomeno said Wednesday that the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of an increase in rainfall activity this week and into the weekend due to the passage of a trough.
“Although we have had a few days of intense heat, there are still areas with soils saturated by the rains that affected the island at the beginning of the month,” Correa Filomeno said. “That is why we call on our people to be aware of the weather conditions because there is an elevated risk of flash floods and landslides. The rain associated with this system could extend into Saturday. Take the proper precautions and avoid misfortunes.”
Meteorologist Ernesto Morales, the NWS’s warnings coordinator, noted that an increase in rain and thunderstorm activity is forecast, driven by abundant humidity and unstable conditions.
“Prolonged periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall will increase the risk of flooding, rising rivers and landslides,” he said. “It is possible that some rivers will overflow and flash floods may also develop. Residents and visitors are advised to keep an eye out for forecast updates, especially those who live or travel in flood-prone areas. Preparation is critical before any significant rain event. Making sure you have an emergency plan, staying informed through weather updates from official sources, and securing your property can make all the difference in protecting lives and minimizing damage.”
Public Safety (DSP by its Spanish initials) Secretary Alexis Torres Ríos and Correa Filomeno added that the DSP bureaus and the NMEAD operational zones have been activated in case of any eventuality. The NMEAD maintains communication with all the municipal emergency management offices and federal agencies.
