Officers attached to the Fajardo Region Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) filed criminal charges under Law 54, Puerto Rico’s gender violence statute, against Reinaldo Joel López Arroyo, 24, a resident of Fajardo who is the pastor at Ekklesia Church in the northeastern coastal town.
According to the police, the events date back to Saturday, in Fajardo, where a woman filed a complaint in which she alleged that she was attacked and intimidated by her spouse.
The police specified that the events began in December 2020, when the alleged victim reported that the accused started a pattern of physical abuse that consisted of grabbing her by the hair, arms and neck in the middle of discussions, and in the presence of a youngster. He also forced her to have sex, she reported.
This case was brought before the Judge Annette Santiago, who after hearing the evidence determined cause for arrest under articles 3.5, sexual assault; 3.4, restriction of liberty; and 3.1, assault and child abuse; setting a bond of $50,000. López Arroyo was unable to provide bail, so he was admitted to the Bayamón Regional Prison.
Officer Vidalis Carrión, attached to the Fajardo Region CIC, was in charge of the investigation.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 24.
