The Government Ethics Office (GEO) on Wednesday filed complaints against the former mayors of Ponce and San Juan, María Eloísa “Mayita” Meléndez Altieri and Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto, respectively.
According to the GEO, Cruz Soto allegedly hired relatives as municipal employees.
“During the period that the defendant held the position of mayor of the municipality of San Juan, she hired the professional services of Mrs. Nilsa Medina Piña, who at the date of the aforementioned contracts was the wife of Mr. Lidy López Morales, who held the position of Director of Health of the Municipality of San Juan,” states the complaint filed on Dec. 10.
In addition, Cruz Soto signed eight contracts between June 2015 and July 2020 without authorization from the GEO.
For this reason, the GEO imposed a $20,000 fine against her.
The GEO also filed a complaint against Meléndez Altieri for giving work to eight members of her work team that were not endorsed by the municipal assembly.
In the same way, the GEO imposed a fine of $20,000 against the current statehood delegate.
The former mayors have a period of 20 days to answer the complaints.
