Almost two weeks after taking office, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has yet to decide who will replace Col. Antonio López Figueroa as police commissioner.
When asked about this matter during the swearing-in ceremony for Gurabo Mayor Rosacheli Rivera, the governor confirmed that she is consulting with federal authorities regarding the appointment.
“We are still evaluating candidates to fill various government positions,” the governor said. “As for the police, we are awaiting guidance from the federal agency, but there is currently a commissioner in office who has our full support to carry out his duties.”
During a television broadcast on Jan. 2, as she walked from the Capitol to La Fortaleza, González Colón hinted that she had chosen a replacement and that the person is publicly known. However, no announcement was made after six rounds of appointments at press conferences, during which she appointed Brig. Gen. Arturo Garffer as secretary of the Department of Public Safety.
The four police unions have joined forces in asking the governor to appoint a police commissioner, preferably someone within the police ranks.
