Governor declares day of mourning for former lawmaker Tirado Delgado

Jenniffer González Colón on Wednesday declared a day of mourning for former lawmaker Cirilo Tirado Delgado.


The day of mourning will be this Friday, when the former Popular Democratic Party legislator’s burial will take place; on that day, the flags of all public buildings will be flown at half-staff.


In addition to being a politician, Tirado Delgado was also a professor and lawyer. He was born in Yabucoa on March 29, 1935, and died last Friday, March 21.


He served as a member of the island House of Representatives (1973-1984) representing the municipalities of Arroyo, Maunabo and Patillas, where he chaired the Education & Culture Committee and the Constitutional Review & Civil Rights Committee.


He went on to serve as chairman of the Puerto Rico Industrial Commission and administrator of the State Insurance Fund.


Tirado Delgado then served as senator for the District of Guayama (1988-1996). In the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Labor, Veterans’ Affairs, and Human Resources and was the minority spokesperson on the Finance Committee.


He earned his law degree from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Law and was a professor at the Department of Education for 15 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education from the University of Puerto Rico.


The governor extended her condolences to former legislator Cirilo Tirado Rivera on the passing of his father, and to his entire family and friends.
