With a vote of 51 to 42, the United States Senate earlier this week confirmed the appointment of Gustavo Gelpí as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said in a written statement on Monday: “My congratulations to federal judge Gustavo Gelpí for his confirmation to serve as the second Puerto Rican on the First Circuit Court of Appeals.”

“After expressly recommending him, last June I had the honor of accompanying him in his successful nomination hearing before the federal Senate Legal Committee, in which his extensive qualifications for this important position were evidenced,” Pierluisi said. “I am grateful to the federal Senate for recognizing that he has always been a distinguished jurist and advocate for the rule of law throughout his legal career for the past 19 years.

Congratulations!! All of us on our island wish him every success in his new and important assignment. Puerto Rico is proud of our Judge Gustavo Gelpí!”

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón said meanwhile: “I congratulate Judge Gustavo Gelpí for being confirmed as a judge of the federal Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the second Latino and Puerto Rican to be a member of that court.”

“We have full confidence in his ability and we have no doubt that he will continue to exercise justice with dignity,” she said. “I am extremely proud of the recognition from the federal government and my colleagues in the Senate of the caliber of this exceptional jurist in my district. His nomination had the overwhelming support of local leaders of all ideologies and of numerous civic groups at the local and national level.”

“His career has been nationally recognized by both political parties, having been nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate in 2006 to be a district judge of the federal court, where he stands out today as presiding judge; and for the second time receiving a presidential nomination, now by President Joseph Biden, and approved for the second time in the Senate, now as an appeals judge in the federal court,” González Colón said. “I reiterate in my statements that Judge Gustavo Gelpí, having extraordinary credentials, unquestionable credibility and necessary rectitude, will fully meet the demands and expectations as a judge in the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.”
