Regarding the blackouts that have kept thousands of LUMA Energy customers without service since Saturday in municipalities such as Coamo, Aibonito and Santa Isabel, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said Wednesday that his team is “on top of LUMA.”
“Well, my team is on top of LUMA to speed up the necessary repairs to the grid,” the governor said in response to questions from the press. “When I say my team, I mean everybody, my entire team, that is, the chief of staff, the assistant secretary of energy affairs, [Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority Executive Director] Josué Colón, [Private-Partnerships Authority Executive Director] Fermín Fontanés, among others.”
“So yes, to answer, we are on top of LUMA to finish the repairs that it has to carry out as a result of the breakdowns that occurred due to the heavy rains, the excessive humidity that occurred recently,” he added.
Alejandro González, LUMA Energy’s central and southern region lines director, announced Tuesday night an eight-hour rotating service interruption plan for sectors in the municipalities of Santa Isabel, Coamo and Aibonito that have been out of service for more than 24 hours.
“This contingency plan aims to minimize the impact of the breakdown of the transformer in Santa Isabel, which also provides service to Coamo and sectors of Aibonito. Through this plan, energized communities will be rotated to ensure they all have service in periods of up to eight hours daily, while simultaneously working on a permanent solution,” González said in a written statement. “These schedules will be shared through LUMA’s social media. Critical loads such as water pumps and hospitals will not be affected by these rotating schedules; they will have uninterrupted electrical service and it has been shared with the municipal staff of each town.”
