The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP by its initials in Spanish) announced the signing of a collaborative agreement with La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos to establish resource support between the two entities and the development of educational initiatives and cultural activities, such as the Tito Matos Fest.

The ICP granted La Casa de la Plena a total of $50,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds, of which $25,000 are for operating expenses and the other $25,000 are for the Tito Matos Fest.

“We recognize the great legacy of maestro Tito Matos and believe in the mission of La Casa de la Plena. With this agreement we wish to reaffirm our commitment to the development, conservation and exhibition of plena music,” ICP Executive Director Carlos Ruiz said.

Mariana Reyes Angleró, Matos’ widow and president of La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos, emphasized that “Tito revolutionized plena both musically and socially.”

“He was a ‘requinto’ virtuoso who was not afraid of innovation in his sound, and he was a leader who created events and projects that turned plena into a movement both in Puerto Rico and in the diaspora,” she said.

With the signed agreement, the ICP will seek opportunities for the participation of La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos in cultural management projects and programmatic activities of the ICP. In addition, both entities will provide support in joint projects in the areas of communications, photography, video and advertising, among others. The parties undertake to manage educational initiatives concerning art and culture and to create an educational curriculum on the musical genre of plena.

Likewise, the agreement establishes a collaboration in the development of a line of tambourines from La Casa de la Plena and support for the realization of the Tito Matos Fest.

The Casa de la Plena Tito Matos is an exhibition and workshop space in the Taller Comunidad La Goyco on Calle Loíza, Santurce. Its mission is to preserve, develop and promote Puerto Rican culture and the legacy of artist Héctor “Tito” Matos, as well as serving as an archive and information collection space, and a space for conversations about gender.

The Tito Matos Fest is a four-day event with a wide range of activities to celebrate the life and legacy of the renowned plenero. Additionally, the festival helps raise funds to maintain the operations of La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos.
