Irene Sofía Lucio to star in the play ‘Disruption’ in New York

Puerto Rican actress Irene Sofía Lucio announced this week that she will star in the play “Disruption,” an off-Broadway production to be staged at the Pershing Square Signature Center in New York.

“Bringing Mia to life in ‘Disruption’ at the Pershing Square Signature Center promises to be an intense journey,” Lucio said in a written statement.

The San Juan native will play Mia, the central character in the thriller written by Andrew Stein. The plot examines intuition, friendship, personal relationships and free will in a world dominated by automated systems.

“At the end of the day, technology may try to predict our decisions, but it can never replace the vulnerability, instinct, and genuine trust shared between human beings,” Lucio said. “That is the deeply human vision and critical insight I seek to champion, both on stage and in every new story I choose to tell.”

Lucio was part of the original cast of “Liberation,” a production that concluded its run at the James Earl Jones Theatre and won the 2026 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, according to the information provided.

Born in Río Piedras and a graduate of Princeton and Yale universities, the actress has performed on stages in London’s West End, the off-Broadway circuit, The Public Theater and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

She also originated the character of Patricia in “Slave Play,” a role she performed from the initial workshops through the production’s runs in New York and Los Angeles.
