Isabela Mayor Miguel “Ricky” Méndez Pérez has announced that a groundbreaking ceremony for Veterans Plaza will take place next Monday, Memorial Day, May 26. The event marks the beginning of municipal projects aimed at updating and maintaining public facilities under Méndez’s administration.
“We in Isabela honor all our veterans this Monday. At 10:30 a.m., we will share the details of this project,” the mayor said. “We invite everyone to join us at the intersection of PR-113 and Juan Hernández Ortiz Avenue, km 1.7 in Barrio Pueblo.”
The project has received a $2.5 million allocation from a combination of funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and City Revitalization, and it is expected to last some nine months.
“This project is designed to preserve the cultural and multicultural representation of our city within its Historic District,” the mayor added. “We aim to engage young people from diverse economic backgrounds in maintaining and restoring the historical, architectural, and environmental heritage of Isabela.”
The project will involve partial demolition of existing structures, the installation of new lighting poles, and the removal of outdated furniture. Additionally, the plaza pavement will undergo partial demolition, and new concrete slabs with a stamped finish will be laid. Repairs will also be made to planters and low walls.
The new street furniture will include concrete tables and chairs, solid waste containers, bicycle racks, an Isabela entrance sign, a museum pergola, and a steel gate. Landscaping efforts will be implemented, alongside electrical improvements and enhancements to the water system and connections.
