Lawmaker: LUMA has failed the residents of his district

By John McPhaul

Rep. Jorge Navarro Suárez charged Thursday that in the legislative district he represents, which covers Aguas Buenas, Guaynabo and San Juan, private power grid operator LUMA Energy “has failed.”

LUMA Energy “is grossly negligent because they had enough time to prepare and they are not getting a passing grade,” Navarro Suárez said in a written statement. “LUMA has little time left to demonstrate that it can meet its contractual obligations.”

The District 2 representative said “I will do everything in my power so that LUMA Energy rectifies its poor service or sanctions are imposed against LUMA for breach of contract.”

“I don’t care if it’s called PREPA [Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority] or LUMA,” he said.

“LUMA’s excuses are unacceptable. Constant blackouts, understaffing and poor communication define the bad experience I have had with LUMA. People are affected doubly because electrical energy is necessary to activate the pumps used by the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority for water distribution.”

Navarro Suárez added that “nothing is set in stone.”

“Let’s call their number,” he said, “because if they continue with the deficient service, I will seek all avenues for sanctions to be imposed on LUMA for breach of contract.”
