Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU by its industry initials) in Carolina reached Level 2 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program this week after completing a carbon emissions inventory and establishing a plan to reduce them.

“This achievement consolidates SJU’s position as a leader in the fight against climate change and a benchmark in environmental management in the region,” said Jorge Hernández, president of Aerostar Airport Holdings, in a written statement issued Tuesday.

The accreditation granted by the International Airports Council for Latin America and the Caribbean validates that the airport has reduced its emissions in direct operations through measures such as energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.

Jaime Pabón, director of sustainability at Aerostar, emphasized that only 17 other airports in the United States have reached Level 2.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation program has five levels and is the only global carbon management certification system for airports. Level 2 represents effective emissions reductions and measurable targets.

Dr. Rafael Echevarne, director general of the Airports Council International-Latin America & Caribbean, congratulated the airport for demonstrating effective carbon management and achieving tangible reductions in emissions as part of its strategic plan.

The accreditation adds to other recognitions the airport has earned. In November, SJU’s sustainability program received the Airports Going Green 2024 award from the American Association of Airport Executives and the Chicago Department of Aviation.
