Designated Justice Secretary Janet Parra Mercado announced Sunday that charges have been filed against Gabriel Ortiz, 39, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in Río Piedras.

According to the investigation by Officer Johara Robinson, assigned to the Sexual Crimes and Child Abuse Division of the Police Bureau, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim using force last Wednesday morning while she was on her way to class at the University of Puerto Rico.

Judge Ángel Rivera Miranda of the San Juan Court of First Instance found cause for Ortiz’s arrest and set bail at $150,000. Since bail was not made, the accused man was taken to jail.

The preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 16.
