With music, games and a backpack full of learning, health services organization MMM Multihealth this week launched “Misión Mochilita” (Little Backpack Mission), an educational initiative created to teach children ages 5 to 12 how to prepare for hurricane season with their families.
In its first phase, the campaign will bring participatory experiences to summer camps around Puerto Rico, transforming hurricane preparedness into a fun and educational activity for young children.
The initiative centers around an original song by the iconic children’s group Atención Atención, titled “Tu Mochilita” (Your Little Backpack). It was created to teach, in a fun and memorable way, the basic steps for preparing a backpack in case of a weather emergency.
“We recognize that hurricane season preparedness begins with education and access to clear information,” said Solange de Lahongrais, president of MMM Multihealth. “With ‘Misión Mochilita,’ we want to support communities in Puerto Rico by providing families, especially children, with practical and accessible tools so they can learn early on how to protect themselves, take care of their health, and support their loved ones in times of emergency.”
Additionally, renowned meteorologist Ada Monzón will join the educational efforts by giving talks at camps, providing specialized and practical information on the importance of being prepared during hurricane season. MMM Multihealth will also collaborate with the Department of Recreation and Sports, the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD by its acronym in Spanish), participating municipalities, and Goya of Puerto Rico to broaden the reach of the message to where it is needed most.
The visits to summer camps across the island will include those in San Juan, Canóvanas, Ponce and Mayagüez. During each visit, participants will enjoy musical performances by Atención Atención, educational workshops on hurricane preparedness led by Monzón, and the distribution of emergency kits. Each kit will be equipped with a flashlight, a whistle, children’s activity books, non-perishable food items provided by Goya of Puerto Rico, and an educational guide on hurricane preparedness endorsed by NMEAD.
