MLB’s restart encounters an obstacle it can’t negotiate with

Major League Baseball’s players and team owners spent last week trying to finalize the structure of a possible 2020 season after tense negotiations. But Friday, the ominous backdrop of those talks — the coronavirus pandemic — showed just how little the two sides really control.

The league was planning to temporarily close all of its training complexes in Florida and Arizona after players in both locations tested positive for the virus, according to an official with direct knowledge of the plan who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league had not yet made an official announcement.
