The Multisectoral Council in Support of the Homeless Population, which is attached to the Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration (ASSMCA by its initials in Spanish), held its first Municipal Integration Symposium earlier this week at the Cataño Convention Center.
The event brought together representatives from Puerto Rico’s 78 municipalities, nonprofit organizations and government agencies to share solutions and resources in the fight against homelessness.
ASSMCA Administrator Carmen Bonet Vázquez emphasized the importance of collaborative work to address the problem of homelessness in Puerto Rico.
“We are focused on making visible the services and aid for the homeless population, and on strengthening communication between the sectors that provide support to this population,” Bonet Vázquez said in a written statement.
Pedro Dedós Pérez, the executive director of the council, stressed the essential work of the municipalities.
“Thanks to the 78 municipal liaisons in the Council, we have been able to better coordinate services and channel vital resources to the homeless,” he said.
During the event, Anitza Cox Marrero, from Estudios Técnicos Inc., presented the results of the 2024 Homeless People Count, highlighting the most affected areas on the island. In addition, the funds available to address the immediate needs of the homeless population were the subject of a discussion led by Argie Díaz and Christian Pagán Mercado.
The ASSMCA presented its service and housing programs for homeless people, especially those with mental health problems or substance dependency, as detailed by Dr. Hilda Serrano Morales, director of the ASSMCA’s De Vuelta a la Vida Program.
