By John McPhaul
After the pandemic prevented the holding of internal union elections, the president of the Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR by its Spanish acronym), Víctor Manuel Bonilla Sánchez, announced on Monday that they are ready for the teachers to select the members of the Executive Committee of their Local Union, who will defend the rights of teachers in the public education system. The internal union elections will take place from May 16 to 18, 2022.
“It is known that the AMPR – Local Union is the exclusive elected representative of the teachers. Therefore, it is important that all affiliated associate teachers go to the polls and select the candidate of their choice for the different positions, because they will make up the teacher leadership that will represent them for the next three years. In the hands of our affiliates is the opportunity to elect the group of leaders who will take on the necessary struggles to do justice to the teaching profession,” Bonilla Sánchez said in a written statement.
The teacher leader stressed that all associate teachers are authorized by the Department of Education (DE) to attend the election depending on the day that corresponds to them according to their region. This process will be done after noon. Bonilla elect the group of leaders who will take on the necessary struggles to do justice to the teaching profession,” Bonilla Sánchez explained that “after exercising their right to vote, teachers do not have to return to their schools. They will be given an appearance sheet that must be submitted electronically together with the DE-14.”
