Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration Commissioner (NMEAD by its acronym in Spanish) Ángel Jiménez Colón warned Tuesday that light to strong winds are expected from Thursday through the weekend, which will cause deteriorating sea conditions on the north coast of Puerto Rico.

“These winds will cause dangerous maritime conditions and dangerous rip currents on the north coast,” Jiménez Colón said in a written statement.

According to Ernesto Morales, the National Weather Service Advisories Coordinator, advisories will be issued for small boats and a high risk of rip currents remains on beaches in northern Puerto Rico, from Aguadilla to Fajardo, including Culebra and the Virgin Islands.

Jiménez Colón and the Public Safety Secretary Arturo Garffer noted that emergency management personnel are in constant communication with municipal offices, commonwealth and federal agencies regarding any situation that may arise due to the event.

Authorities urged the public to take precautions on land and secure tents, awnings and other objects that could become projectiles in wind gusts. For emergencies, the public should call 911, they said.
