By John McPhaul
The Northeast Ecological Corridor (NEC) Coalition is inviting the public to the first “Let’s Defend the Ecological Corridor 2021 Race.” Participants are urged to come run or walk along a five-kilometer trail route in the NEC Reserve and contribute to its protection.
The event, which is endorsed by the Puerto Rico Long Distance Committee, will take place on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 a.m. in the village of San Miguel in the NEC Reserve.
There is also an option for virtual participation from Sunday, Nov. 28 to Saturday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. (https://goo.gl/maps/Rk2mJaUe8jq4PzD)
The route is five kilometers (3.1 miles), with no asphalt or road; it is approximately two miles on dirt and 20 meters on stony ground, approximately one mile on sand and there is a short passage where there are bushes and branches.
Registration continues through Dec. 4. There is a registration donation of $25 (the first 150 people to register receive a t-shirt, medal and merchandise package).
To participate in the virtual format, the donation is $33 to cover shipping charges.
All donations will be directed to the efforts of the NEC Coalition and the management of the NEC Reserve.
Medals will be awarded at the end of the event.
Organizers remind participants to bring: Safety equipment: mask (preferably reusable), reusable water bottle (there will be an oasis for refilling bottles), sunscreen, comfortable clothing for walking or running, and running shoes or cross trainers.
