NPP leader in Aguada alleges squandering of public funds in the town

The New Progressive Party president in Aguada suggested that “spending $215,000 on parties is an exorbitant amount in times that require the best use of public funds in the face of the constant cuts” in funding to island towns made by the Financial Oversight and Management Board.

Wilbert Nieves Chaparro, the New Progressive Party president in Aguada, on Monday accused the town’s mayor, Christian Cortés Feliciano, of disbursing some $215,000 in public funds for parties in times of economic hardship for the employees of the municipal council, who at the beginning of the current quarter took a 50% cut in their Christmas bonuses.

“We are very concerned that public money is not being used well,” Nieves Chaparro said. “The municipal administration must prioritize and establish the priorities that urgently need to be addressed. It seems to me that spending $215,000 on parties is an exorbitant amount in times that require the best use of public funds in the face of the constant cuts of the [Financial] Oversight [and Management] Board to the municipalities.”

The NPP leader in Aguada offered as an alternative the search for sponsorships and support among business owners themselves as a mechanism to identify other sources of income, in addition to unifying activities that are held on contiguous dates.

“We know that these activities are so that our town has recreational opportunities to share with the family,” Nieves Chaparro said. “The point of our complaint is that the administration must be more prudent in the expenses they accrue a few months apart.”

He noted contracts filed and reported to the Office of the Comptroller that indicate the hiring of the same company to provide services for public events (Discovery of P.R.), a contract for $80,000, and the other contract for the sum of $135,000 (Patron Saint Festivities) for a total amount of $215,000 with under six months between the two events.
