Gov. Jenniffer González Colón signed Joint Resolution 3 earlier this week to transfer ownership of Luis Muñoz Rivera Park to the Municipality of San Juan, in order to strengthen its tourism development and improve access to federal funds.
“The transfer of Luis Muñoz Rivera Park will allow the Municipality of San Juan to consolidate and coordinate a diverse recreational and tourism offering, strengthening development opportunities for our capital,” states the legislative measure.
The transfer was carried out by the Real Property Evaluation and Disposition Committee created by the Fiscal Plan Compliance Act. The park had belonged to the National Parks Program under the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.
The measure highlights the park’s importance as an iconic space and its proximity to other municipal facilities such as Sixto Escobar Park and El Escambrón Spa. Rep. Eddie Charbonier Chinea and San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo were present at the signing.
Additionally, the governor signed Joint Resolution 2, which names highway PR-863 in Toa Baja after José “Manrique” Rivera Torres, in recognition of his educational, community and spiritual legacy.
Rivera Torres, born in Bayamón and raised in Toa Baja, distinguished himself as a teacher, school principal, superintendent and community leader. He promoted Christian music and founded a family business that strengthened the ties of the Pájaros-Candelaria neighborhood.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works and the Municipality of Toa Baja will install road markings and organize commemorative activities. Rep. Pedro Julio Santiago Guzmán, Toa Baja Mayor Bernardo Márquez García and Rivera Torres’ family members were present at the signing.
