The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) asked the public on Monday to exercise restraint when using air conditioners in the face of a heat wave engulfing the island.
“We urge our customers to exercise caution in energy consumption to avoid service interruptions due to high demand for electricity,” PREPA said on Twitter.
A heat warning was in effect Monday for coastal municipalities in the north of Puerto Rico until 4 p.m. due to estimated temperatures of up to 111 degrees.
Areas not covered by the advisory were also expected to experience above normal heat indices across urban and coastal sectors of the local islands.
