The damaged ferry Summer Wind was expected to return to service Sunday, bringing to eight the number of vessels transporting passengers to the offshore island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra, Maritime Transportation Authority (ATM by its Spanish initials) Executive Director Jorge Droz said in a statement.

On Friday, a team of mechanics repaired broken batteries on the boat and the next day they made other repairs needed to relaunch Summer Wind as soon as possible, Droz said in a written statement.

After starting her journey to the main island late Friday, Summer Wind developed mechanical problems and had to return to the port of Vieques. All the passengers were picked up by the vessel Cayo Blanco and arrived at the port of Ceiba safely and without additional inconveniences.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Summer Wind, one of the vessels of the HMS company, has a limited maximum capacity of 180 passengers.

Meanwhile, the ATM executive director, along with La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Noelia García Bardales, Culebra Mayor Edilberto “Junito” Romero and Sen. Marissita Jiménez, announced the return to service of Isleño, a passenger and heavy cargo ship with capacity for 208 passengers and 22 motor vehicles. Isleño received improvements with an investment of $1.1 million.

Citizens who are interested in traveling to Vieques and Culebra have the platform through which they can purchase tickets and check ferry schedules.
