After almost a week of public and executive hearings, the Puerto Rico Senate on Thursday confirmed Carlos Rivera Santiago as secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources.
Senators from the majority New Progressive Party voted in favor of the confirmation, while nearly all of the minority members of the upper chamber -- including Puerto Rican Independence Party Sen. Juan Dalmau Ramírez, independent Sen. José Vargas Vidot and all but one member of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) delegation -- voted against it. PDP Sen. Cirilo Tirado Rivera recused himself. After the voice vote, PDP Sen. Eduardo Bhatia Gautier recorded his vote against.
