New Progressive Party Sen. Henry Neumann Zayas announced on Tuesday his retirement from public service by resigning from his Senate seat for the District of San Juan, effective June 30.
Neumann Zayas said in a written statement that “the decision has been a very difficult one because I am passionate about my work, but my main duty is as a father and to give all my support to my son in a crucial stage of his life.”
“My son Günther, 14 years old, has earned a great opportunity to continue developing as a basketball player and student at a school in the United States,” said the former Recreation and Sports secretary. “The presence of parents in the life of a child is of the utmost importance to them and that is why I have made the decision to accompany them.”
Neumann Zayas, a former basketball player himself, said “serving Puerto Rico has been one of the most rewarding experiences” in his life.
“Since my long career as president of National Superior Basketball, my fruitful years as secretary of the Department of Recreation and Sports, and during the time I have worked as a senator for the benefit of the people,” he said. “I thank everyone who has been with me, in the different positions I have held and the People who gave me their trust.”
