The San Juan Senators defeated the Mayagüez Indians 7-5 on Wednesday night at Isidoro “Cholo” García Stadium in Mayagüez in Game 5 of the Final Series of the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC by its initials in Spanish).

With the win, the series now stands at 4 games to 1 in favor of the Indians.

San Juan starter Jason García (1-0) was one of the keys to the victory. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs and five hits, in addition to recording two strikeouts and issuing three walks.

The Indians, for their part, committed several costly errors -- four in all, with miscues in infield communication -- to go along with poor baserunning.

San Juan struck first in the second inning, with a series of hits that allowed Kenen Irizarry to drive in the first two runs of the game. Hits by Jan Hernández and Vimael Machín increased the lead to 3-0.

In the next inning, the Senators added two more runs, one of them unearned, thanks to hits by Brantley Bell and Jadiel Sánchez, extending the lead to 5-0.

Ramón Rodríguez added another run in the fourth inning for San Juan to make it 6-0. The Indians got on the board in the bottom of the frame, with Emmanuel Rivera and Eddie Rosario scoring runs to make it 6-2.

Mayagüez rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, keyed by a double by Anthony García, which drove in two runs to pull the Indians to within a run, 6-5.

Despite the pressure, the Senators held firm.

In the eighth, Hernández extended the lead with an RBI double, and in the ninth, Alexander Castro closed the game without allowing any more runs, earning his first save in the series.

The loss went to Daryl Thompson (0-1), who allowed three runs in two and two-thirds innings.

Game 6 is Friday at 7 p.m. at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey.
