The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute (PRSI) reported on Wednesday that the number of graduates in creative disciplines increased by 26.4% between 2021 and 2022, while employment in that sector decreased by 11.3% during the same period.

“This report puts into perspective the need to strengthen public policies, invest in specialized training, and support small businesses in the creative sector,” said Francisco Pesante, manager of statistical projects at PRSI, in a written statement.

According to the 2021-2022 Creative Industries Report, the number of graduates in fields such as art, design, technology and media increased from 1,527 in 2021 to 1,930 in 2022. A bachelor’s degree was the most common at 56.2%, and graphic design was the most popular discipline at 20.6%.

Regarding the business structure of the creative sector, the report reported 2,227 active establishments in 2022, a 5% increase compared to the previous year. Of the total, 68.5% are small businesses with between one and four employees, and 86% are microenterprises with fewer than 10 employees.

Despite the growth in graduates and new businesses, the number of people employed in the creative industries fell from 16,415 in 2021 to 14,550 in 2022. The report also revealed gender inequalities in high-paying sectors, the geographic concentration of companies in municipalities with greater purchasing power, and a trade deficit where imports triple the value of exports.

However, the PRSI emphasized that areas such as technology and advertising offer competitive salaries and opportunities to attract talent. It also highlighted the role of creative industries as a driver of innovation and entrepreneurship.
