The University of Puerto Rico at Carolina, through its Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (DECEP by its acronym in Spanish), has launched a new program tailored specifically for older adults and their caregivers.

ThE initiative includes a variety of academic and recreational courses, as well as a Professional Certificate in Comprehensive Geriatric Patient Care, addressing the unique needs of a growing demographic.

The programs aim to provide accessible and relevant educational opportunities that enhance the quality of life for older adults in areas such as technology, art, health and wellness. They also foster personal development and social integration, creating an enriching environment for participants and their caregivers.

“Education is a right regardless of age, and at the University of Puerto Rico at Carolina, we reaffirm our commitment to offering opportunities for everyone,” UPR Carolina Chancellor José Ignacio Meza Pereira said. “With our aging population continuously growing, it is essential to provide tools that enable older adults to remain active in their communities and help their caregivers manage their emotions and responsibilities effectively. We firmly believe that learning has no barriers, and investing in the education of this population enriches society as a whole.”

Through the initiatives, DECEP seeks to create an inclusive learning environment tailored to the specific needs of older adults, promoting their active participation in society. Courses will be available both in person and online, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all participants.

“At DECEP at UPR Carolina, we are dedicated to offering innovative programs that respond to the needs of our community. We recognize that learning is a source of personal growth and well-being at any age, which is why we have designed courses specifically for older adults,” said Yaidaris Rodríguez Báez, director of DECEP at UPR Carolina. “With this initiative, we aim not only to expand their knowledge but also to provide a space for interaction, development and empowerment. We are excited to launch this program and continue promoting accessible and inclusive education for everyone.”
