During her message as part of graduation ceremonies at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Bayamón Campus on Wednesday, UPR Interim President Dr. Mayra Olavarría Cruz called for good judgment to prevail in approving the budget for the island’s main public university, and recognition of “the great contributions that this institution has made for more than a century to the economic, social and educational development of Puerto Rico.”
The event was held at Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum.
“The University of Puerto Rico is the country’s main social development project and is the cornerstone of the island’s economic development,” Olavarría Cruz said. “In recent years, the institution has suffered drastic cuts to its budget, despite having complied with more than 90% of the conditions imposed by the Financial Oversight and Management Board for its operation.”
“The students who start their university careers in August full of aspirations; current students who fight against all odds to move forward and achieve their dreams; the faculty that devotes its life to the distinguished work of educating the new generations of Puerto Ricans and those boys and girls who grow up longing for the possibility of a better future that guarantees an accessible and excellent university education, do not deserve to be prey to uncertainty,” she said.
“The UPR requires a decent budget for its operation,” the interim president added. “We trust that good judgment will prevail and that the great contributions that this institution has made for more than a century to the economic, social, and educational development of Puerto Rico will be recognized.”
