Vieques Mayor José “Junito” Corcino Acevedo reiterated on Monday that the construction on the island municipality’s new hospital will begin in the coming year.

The mayor also thanked the administration of Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia for giving priority to the project, which he described as “of great urgency for the people of Vieques.”

“Our municipal administration has as its mission the construction of a new and modern hospital to serve our people,” Corcino Acevedo said. “That goal is now closer than ever with the awarding of the [contract] to the company Caribe Tecno CRL for the design and construction of the hospital. Our administration collaborated during that process and will continue to work in the design phases, obtaining construction permits and developing the facility, which is so necessary for Vieques.”

On Sunday, the governor and Infrastructure Financing Authority Executive Director Eduardo Rivera announced the winning bidder for the construction of the hospital.

“I want to thank the governor’s administration because it has always given Vieques priority,” the mayor said. “Since we took the reins of the municipal administration in January 2021, we have said that the construction of this new hospital is a priority and so it will be. The construction of this modern facility, which will meet the needs of our people, begins next year. That is already a reality.”

The new hospital will be located on the premises that housed the former Susan Centeno Diagnostic and Treatment Center, which suffered extensive damage with the passage of Hurricane Maria in September 2017, including to its air conditioning and ventilation systems, and roofs.

It was demolished a few months ago to make room for the new facility.
