Water from the Luquillo Filtration Plant was selected Thursday as the best in Puerto Rico during the 14th edition of the “Flavors of Water” competition held at Plaza Las Américas shopping mall in Hato Rey.

“This competition represents much more than a simple flavor contest,” said Luis González Delgado, CEO of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA). “It showcases the extraordinary work our employees do day after day to ensure that the water reaching Puerto Rican homes is of high quality.”

The event brought together 10 filtration plants recognized for their compliance with the quality standards established by the island Health Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Among the judges was first husband José Yovín Vargas Llavona, who described his participation as “an honor.”

“Water is life, and recognizing the work and care that goes into its production is a way to highlight the importance of this essential resource for our health and well-being as a people,” Vargas Llavona said.

The public also had the opportunity to participate through direct voting and selected the Apeaderos filtration plant in Villalba, earning it the top prize in the “People’s Choice” category.

The Luquillo filtration plant, as the winner of this year’s edition, will represent Puerto Rico in the national competition organized by the American Water Works Association, June 8-11 in Denver, Colorado.

Other participating plants included facilities in Canóvanas, Bayamón, Cayey, Vega Baja, Naranjito, Sabana Grande, Maricao and Peñuelas.
