Waterworks repairs to interrupt service in Ponce today

By The Star Staff

Amairis Esteves Jordán, director of the Ponce operational area of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), announced Tuesday that water service will be interrupted today as part of the improvement and optimization project being carried out at the Ponce Nueva filtration plant in Ponce.

Esteves Jordán said in a written statement that “the valves in the aerators will be replaced and a 30-inch valve will be installed in the settled water channel.”

“In order to carry out these tasks, it is necessary to stop the treatment and distribution of water from the Ponce Nueva filtration plant” today.

If there are no setbacks, the scheduled work will proceed from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., so that residents of the following communities in Ponce will experience from low pressure to interruption of drinking water service: Avenida Las Américas, Río Canas, Morell Campos, Clausells, La Victoria, La Villa, La Playa de Ponce, Vista del Mar, Pámpanos, Lirios, El Tamarindo and El Vigía.

Due to the extensiveness of the system, once the work is completed, the drinking water service will be gradually restored to the communities starting tonight and into the early hours of Thursday. For this reason, PRASA will have potable water available in tanker trucks in various communities in Ponce. Once the service is restored, it is recommended to boil the water for three minutes before consumption.
