Zenen Vega Torres, 39, a resident of Trujillo Alto, was remanded to prison on Tuesday after failing to post bail set for charges of assaulting an elderly person and disturbing the peace. The incident was reported on Monday morning at the drive-thru of a fast-food restaurant in Puerto Nuevo.

According to authorities’ reports, New Progressive Party Secretary General and former San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini Padilla, 66, was entering the premises in a Chevrolet vehicle. Vega Torres, who was performing painting duties at the location, did not notice the presence of the moving vehicle and was subsequently struck by its side mirror.

Santini exited his vehicle to assess the situation, at which point Vega Torres punched the former mayor, knocking him to the ground and causing him to sustain an open wound to his head, for which he required medical attention.

Judge Arelis Ortiz of the San Juan Court found probable cause for arrest and set bail at $30,000, which the defendant failed to post. He was subsequently committed to the Bayamón Correctional Complex.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 30.
