Boxer Olajuwon Acosta held an open workout earlier this week at the Hormigueros Boxing Pavilion as he prepared for his bout for the World Boxing Organization’s NABO Junior Bantamweight Championship.
“We are ready to step into the ring this Saturday at home,” Acosta said in a written statement.
Acosta, boasting a record of 15-0 with 10 knockouts, will face Ephraim Bui -- who holds an 11-1 record with 9 knockouts -- in the main event of the “Choke de Campeones” (Clash of Champions) fight card.
The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds at the 115-pound weight limit and will take place this Saturday at the Palacio de Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez.
“We come into this well-prepared to put on a great show for all my people in Mayagüez,” Acosta said in reference to his hometown. “We know Bui well, and we are fully aware of the quality of boxing he possesses.”
The Virginia-born Bui, who lives in Sugarland, Texas, is coming off a points victory last November over Juan Zayas of Bayamón at Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum for the vacant WBO NABO bantamweight title.
During Monday’s training session, Acosta engaged in rounds of shadowboxing, heavy bag work, speed bag drills, and mitt work as part of his preparation for the title fight.
“It will be a great battle for one of the WBO’s major championships,” the fighter added. “The real winner of the night will be the fans, and I guarantee they will leave thoroughly satisfied. My shot at the World Championship is drawing near.”
In the co-main event, Orlando González will face César Juárez in an 8-round bout in the super featherweight division.
Rohan Polanco will also be in action, taking on Alex Martín in a 10-round fight in the welterweight division.
The undercard will also feature appearances by Mathew Soto, Félix Caraballo, and Yadriel Cabán, among other fighters.
