Tess Amundsen and Imani McGee combined for 51 points as the Monarcas of Juana Díaz defeated the Ganaderas of Hatillo 80-73 on Saturday night at Dolores “Toyita” Martínez Coliseum in Juana Díaz.
The Monarcas used a 12-2 offensive surge at the start of the fourth quarter to ultimately prevail in a Women’s Superior National Basketball (BSNF by its initials in Spanish) game that featured a back-and-forth exchange of baskets through three quarters.
Juana Díaz held only a five-point lead at halftime and entered the final period with a slim 58-57 advantage. However, the Monarcas saved their best offensive effort for the final 10 minutes. Amundsen took charge of the offense, scoring 10 points in the momentum-shifting 12-2 run that extended the host team’s lead to 70-59.
The Ganaderas then put together a run of their own, including two three-pointers from reserve Fabiola Cosme, and a reverse layup by Dontavia Waggoner narrowed the gap to five points, 74-69, but the Monarcas held on through the final minutes for the seven-point victory.
Amundsen led the Monarcas (6-8) with 29 points, while Imani McGee delivered another extraordinary performance in the paint, scoring 22 points, hauling in an astonishing 27 rebounds and making three blocks. Manuela Ríos contributed 11 points and nine assists.
Quinesha Lockett led the Ganaderas (3-12) with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, followed by Waggoner with 21 points and seven rebounds.
