Arecibo marks 135 social‑interest home reconstructions with new residence in Hato Abajo

The Municipality of Arecibo has completed 135 full home reconstructions for residents in need, Mayor Carlos Ramírez Irizarry announced late last week as he delivered a newly built residence to Rolando Ramos Mártir of the Hato Abajo community in sector Los Mora-Altamira.

The project, funded through federal recovery resources, addressed structural deficiencies in Ramos Mártir’s former home and provided a safe, dignified two‑bedroom replacement. The municipality invested $89,000 in the reconstruction, which included land preparation, permitting and construction, the mayor said Friday.

Ramírez Irizarry said the initiative is part of a broader municipal effort launched in 2021 to secure federal funds for housing rehabilitation. To date, Arecibo has completed 135 full reconstructions and carried out additional accessibility improvements for residents with disabilities, including ramps, railings, and bathtub replacements in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The cumulative investment totals $8,205,846.01.

“This case represented an urgent need due to the condition of the previous structure,” the mayor said. “Today we can deliver a fully rehabilitated home in better, safer condition for its resident. I am grateful for the commitment of the Municipal Development and Housing Department, whose work ensures these projects reach the families who need them most.”

The reconstruction forms part of a series of municipal projects aimed at strengthening communities through partial repairs, rehabilitations, and full housing rebuilds using the aforementioned federal recovery funds.

“These federal resources were established to stimulate economic recovery and support investments that strengthen our communities,” Ramírez Irizarry added. “In Arecibo, we have worked to use these funds responsibly to address real needs and improve residents’ quality of life.”
