Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia inaugurated on Wednesday the symposium on economic violence, a form of gender violence that has a devastating impact on victims and their families.
Pierluisi stressed the importance of recognizing and addressing the problem with seriousness and sensitivity, reiterating his commitment to the fight against gender violence.
“This type of violence, although sometimes overlooked, is crucial for us to recognize and address firmly,” the governor said in a written statement. “Economic violence deeply affects the autonomy and well-being of people, perpetuating a cycle of control that prevents them from leaving abusive relationships. It is our responsibility as a society to eradicate it.”
The governor thanked the Puerto Rico Police Bureau and the compliance officer of the PARE Committee for organizing the event.
Pierluisi also highlighted the collaboration of non-profit organizations, the Banking Association, and the island Department of Justice in making victims of economic violence visible and protecting them. In addition, he announced an agreement between the Justice Department, LUMA Energy and the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority to protect essential services for victims of economic violence.
He highlighted the government’s progress in the fight against gender violence, including the implementation of the equity curriculum in schools, awareness campaigns, and improvements in interagency protocols. The governor also highlighted the approval of laws such as Law 32 of 2021 and Law 74 of 2023, which recognize economic violence as a form of gender violence.
