Authorities move to shut down illegal construction in Isabela.

Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Ranger Corps Commissioner Nelson Cruz Santiago announced on Monday the suspension of work on a construction project in the Guayabo neighborhood of Isabela.

“The rangers visited the area of the former Dr. Rodríguez [North West] sand quarry in the Guayabo neighborhood, located in the municipality of Isabela, on February 25th to begin an investigation into a complaint related to the alleged illegal construction of a fence. At that time, and as a preventative measure, the immediate suspension of work was requested,” Cruz Santiago said. “After confirming that no permit existed, the area was visited on March 8th to order the cessation of construction. At that time, members of the Ranger Corps issued the official order. This morning, March 16th, the area was revisited to verify compliance with the stop-work order. However, it had not been obeyed.”

“In response, and in conjunction with the municipal administration of Isabela, the Ranger Corps today filed a complaint with the Office of Permit Management for violations of regulations and laws, including for using the sand from the foundation to mix cement and sifting it for the purpose of plastering, in clear violation of Law 19-2026,” the DNER official continued. “Members of the Puerto Rico Police, led by Lieutenant Carmelo Irizarry, attended to execute the stop-work order.”
