Caguas holds off Carolina for 95-87 win in BSN

Aguada cruises past Mayagüez

The Criollos of Caguas led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter, then rode out a steady push by the Gigantes of Carolina/Canóvanas for a 95-87 victory in a National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league game on Tuesday night.
In the evening’s other matchup, the Santeros of Aguada defeated the Indios of Mayagüez, 99-83.
At Roger Mendoza Coliseum in Caguas, the Criollos jumped out to a 26-9 lead with 2:51 left in the first quarter, then took a 50-40 advantage into the intermission as the Gigantes started to shrink the deficit.
Carolina closed the gap again in the third quarter and trailed by just six points (71-65) heading into the final period, but the Criollos had the answers when it counted and protected their lead to secure the win and hand the visitors their third-straight loss.
Louis King delivered a stellar performance with 33 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Caguas (19-10). Moses Brown had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Travis Trice contributed 12 assists, while Alexander Kappos and Joshua Denton scored 11 points each.
Jaylen Nowell led the way for the Gigantes (15-13) with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Hunter Tyson added 17 points, Scottie James Jr. contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, and Tremont Waters finished with 10 points and nine assists.
At Ismael Chavalillo Delgado Coliseum in Aguada, meanwhile, the Santeros improved their record to 14-14 while Mayagüez fell to 10-18, suffering their third consecutive loss.
Mayagüez got off to an encouraging start, finishing the first quarter with a 26-22 lead. However, the Santeros rallied in the second period and took a 47-44 advantage into halftime.
The home team continued to set the pace in the second half, extending the lead to nine points (71-62) heading into the final 10 minutes.
Aguada closed out the game with a 28-21 fourth quarter to register a comfortable victory.
Rigoberto Mendoza led the Santeros with 23 points. Manny Camper added 17 points, John Jenkins contributed 16, and Iván Gandía finished with 12 points and eight assists.
Eugene German finished with 21 points for the Indios. Nathan Sobey added 15 points and Luis Cuascut contributed 13.
This looks like an exciting volleyball match. A hard-fought win shows real determination, and it should make the LVSМ semifinal group even more interesting.
