Camuy Mayor Gabriel “Gaby” Hernández Rodríguez announced this week that the municipality has strengthened services for senior citizens by distributing 413 vouchers worth $100 each for shopping, as well as acquiring three vehicles to expand daily transportation services offered at care centers.

The efforts were carried out through the Office of the Ombudsman for the Elderly (OPEA by its initials in Spanish).

“We are strengthening services for our senior citizens with concrete resources that improve their quality of life,” the mayor said. “The distribution of shopping vouchers and the arrival of new transportation units are part of a municipal plan to support our senior citizens, ensure their mobility, and facilitate their access to essential services.”

“The support we offer our senior citizens must be felt and seen through specific actions,” Hernández Rodríguez added. “The vouchers alleviate household expenses, and the new transportation units allow us to expand daily routes and better respond to their needs. This initiative strengthens the programs already operating in our communities and ensures consistent services for those who depend on them.”

The vouchers, representing a municipal and state investment of $41,300, were distributed to Camuy residents over 60 years of age. During the event, a Services Fair was also held, with the participation of the commonwealth Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration, the Quebrada Savings and Credit Cooperative, the departments of Housing and Family, Mark Ministry, MCS Classicare and Camuy Health Services, among other entities that offered guidance, health services and emotional support.

The mayor noted that the new vehicles were delivered following an investment of $173,554. They will allow safe transport to medical appointments, recreational activities, educational workshops and wellness programs.

Great to see a municipality investing directly in senior wellbeing. Expanding transportation and support services makes a real difference, especially for older adults who rely on consistent access to medical care and community programs. Strength and mobility are key parts of healthy aging too, and resources like dryland training programs https://www.traindaly.com/dryland-programs — can help seniors stay active and independent longer.
