Cangrejeras defeat Gigantes in BSNF

The Cangrejeras of Santurce defeated the Gigantes of Carolina 69-66 on Tuesday night in a Superior National Basketball (BSNF by its initials in Spanish) league game at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey.
Both teams saved their best for late in the game. With 2:42 remaining and her team trailing by a point, Santurce’s Janelisse Marty drove the length of the court and upon reaching the paint, found an open Teana Muldrow, who easily scored to put the Cangrejeras ahead, 65-64.
On the ensuing possession, Carolina’s Alexis Whitfield missed a shot, but Joyner Holmes grabbed the rebound and converted it into two points, putting the Gigantes back in the lead at 66-65. Moments later, the Cangrejeras kept the ball moving until it reached Muldrow, who sank a three-pointer to put her team ahead 68-66 with 1:23 showing on the clock.
After a minute in which both teams failed to score, Carolina’s María Benítez attempted a three-pointer that missed, and the ball went out of bounds on the rebound with 21 seconds left, giving possession to the Cangrejeras. As Santurce advanced the ball, the Gigantes exhausted their defensive options, resulting in a personal foul against Allysyn Becki, who made the free throw but missed the second with seven seconds remaining.
Carolina managed to secure the rebound and launch an attack on the basket. However, Santurce’s tight defense forced an errant pass that went out of bounds, turning the ball over to Cangrejeras with time about to elapse. Santurce proceeded to inbound the ball and run out the clock for the three-point win.
Shae Kelley led Santurce with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Muldrow posted 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Tayra Meléndez led Carolina with 20 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Grace Berger with 18 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
