Cangrejeras stay unbeaten, Atenienses end skid in LVSF

The sixth week of the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF) season ended Sunday night with the Cangrejeras of Santurce and the Atenienses of Manatí winning their respective matches.
The Cangrejeras (12-0) extended their perfect record by dominating the Leonas of Ponce in three sets, taking all three points to bring their total to 33. The set scores of the match were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17.
With a two-set lead, Santurce maintained control in the third set, leading at the technical timeouts 8-2 and 16-10. After holding on to a six-point lead (18-12) thanks to a block on Nia Parker Robinson and an effective attack by Helena Grozer in the fourth zone, the Cangrejeras team extended the advantage to 22-15 with Tamara Otene attacking with precision in the fourth zone, and closed out the set and match 25-17 with Grozer’s 13th attack of the match.
Santurce dominated the team statistics: 51-39 in attacks, 14-3 in blocks, 2-0 in service aces, 47-42 in defense, and 18-8 in assists. Ponce outpassed the Cangrejeras 34-26.
The Cangrejeras offense was split between Kara McGhee with 18 points, and 15 points each for Otene and Grozer.
Jordan Wilson led the way for Ponce (5-9, 15 points) with 20 points, all on attacks.
Atenienses break losing skid
In the night’s other match, the Atenienses snapped a two-match losing streak by defeating the visiting Pinkin of Corozal in three sets ending in identical scores at Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum.
The set scores were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-23. With the win, Manatí earned all three points, improving its record to 5-9 with 17 points, and moving up to fourth place in the standings.
Corozal remained in third place with a 7-7 record and 21 points.
Wednesday’s Week 7 matches
The Criollas of Caguas (7-7, 23 points), currently in second place, visit the Leonas at Salvador Dijols Arena in Ponce at 8 p.m.
The Pinkin again face the Atenienses at Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum at 8:30 p.m.
