The Cataño Lancheras were crowned champions of the Puerto Rican Women’s Basketball League on Friday night after a resounding 79-39 victory over the Guayama Brujas in a game that sealed their first title in just three seasons since joining the league.
The title-clinching win sparked celebration throughout the municipality. On the court, the players were supported by Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo, while hundreds of fans gathered at the Edwin Rivera Sierra Stage on the waterfront to watch the match on a giant screen installed by the city council.
“The Lancheras’ victory is not only a sporting triumph, it’s a triumph from the heart of Cataño,” Alicea Vasallo said. “This championship reflects our administration’s commitment to sports and youth. Celebrating it alongside our people, both on the court and at the waterfront, is something we will never forget.”
First lady Bethzaida Rodríguez Torres emphasized that “the Lancheras made history with their dedication, talent, and grit.”
“Soon we will all be celebrating together under the sky that unites us,” she said. “This team also represents the greatness of the women of our community.”
For safety reasons and given the proximity of Hurricane Erin to the island, the municipality announced that it would postpone the official celebration. Once weather conditions permit, recognition activities and meetings with the champions were to be announced through the municipality’s social media channels.
