Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce President Margaret Ramírez Báez announced on Monday that she has requested that the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) and the Public-Private Partnerships Authority expressly include nuclear energy and other cutting-edge technologies in the bidding processes to acquire 3,000 megawatts of new electric power generation.

“Puerto Rico is facing a critical moment in its energy transformation. We cannot limit our options when there are technologies that can effectively complement current sources,” Ramírez Báez said in a written statement. “Our call is for the procurement process to be broad, transparent, and open to all alternatives that can provide real solutions to the energy crisis.”

The business leader proposed that expanding the range of options would allow for more competitive, inclusive and reliable bidding, with evaluations based on costs, safety, reliability, environmental impact and technical feasibility.

She pointed out that the request is aligned with the energy policy of the U.S. Department of Energy and with PREB Resolution IEPR-MI-2025-001. Ramírez Báez added that both the island House of Representatives and Senate have supported the evaluation of the technologies through research resolutions.

“Puerto Rico’s competitiveness and economic development depend on us exploring all available energy alternatives,” she said. “The Chamber of Commerce is committed to contributing to this discussion and actively collaborating in the search for solutions that guarantee a modern, reliable, and sustainable electrical system.”
