Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia announced on Wednesday during his visit to Corozal the start of repaving work on highway PR-807 by the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) and the reconstruction of the Ernesto Ríos running and walking track with Federal Emergency Management Agency funds.
“As a result of this collaborative effort between the DTOP and the municipality, Corozal residents have a road infrastructure with greater resilience to atmospheric events,” Pierluisi said in a written statement.
The investment for the repaving is $1.2 million, and $3 million was allocated for the track.
DTOP Secretary Eileen Vélez Vega stressed that such collaborative agreements seek to expedite repair and maintenance work on roads throughout the island, with a historic investment of more than $486 million in the past four years.
Pierluisi and the Corozal Mayor Luis García Rolón toured the Ernesto Ríos track, which has been almost completely rebuilt after the damage caused by Hurricane Maria. More than 50 projects are said to be in the reconstruction stage in Corozal with allocations that reach $22 million.
The governor and the mayor also visited the Corozal Sports Center, which is currently in the design stage, with an investment of $4.4 million, and the Corozal Urbano Filtration Plant, whose restoration was recently completed with a $4.3 million investment.
